Tiny flakes of snow fell from the sky, coating the paved path with a white sheet. The crisp wind felt good on my face. I loved the cold winters in Maine. Much better than warm winters in New Zealand. The silence was growing normal to me, what with my dad being in New Zealand for the past two months. In my hand was a load of letters. I was tired of being stuck in my house so I thought a walk in the park was in order. I blew out, watching my breath appear. in the air. I sat on the wooden bench and began to shuffle through the mail. "Junk. Junk. Junk. What's this?" I asked myself. It was to me from the Kerikeri Police Department. I ripped it open and saw that it was from Officer Beamish, an old friend of the family. He had been the officer that helped out more than anyone else when I got raped.
Dear Kiwi, I smiled at this. I hadn't been called by that nickname in ages. A strong wind came by and I pulled down on my cupcake beanie. I am writing to you on official business. My heart sped up. I hoped it wasn;t anything about my creepy stalker raper. I am very sorry to inform you that your father has been killed. I froze. My head started to spin as questions flooded my thoughts. This couldn't happen. My dad couldn't die, he is Sirius Abney for fucks sake. Maybe he is pulling a prank like he did in his day. But he wouldn't do something that extreme. Would he? I had to read on.
Last week your father went out on a Marine Biology expedition with the Evans. They were out by the reef and your father went in to take a swim. He swam about 50 meters from the boat. James Evans saw a fin and started shouting at your dad to swim back. By the time your dad heard him, it was too late. The shark pulled him under and when your dad's body floated to the surface, his torso had been bitten into. It was an instant thing. He didn't suffer for long, Scarlettt. I am very sorry. We have boughten you a ticket to fly out here for his funeral. When you go back to the States, Alli Evans will come stay with you until you graduate. The Evans were my dad's best mates. They helped raise me so having Alli live with me would be great on any other condition than this one. I couldn't read anymore. Emotions flooded through me and tears started burning my eyes. My breath grew shorter. This couldn;t have happened.
